Unconscious Greetings

How many times a day does someone say ‘hello, how are you’? The greeting has become so universal that most people answer ‘fine and you’ without listening or reflecting on the question. In my opinion, a symptom of a far greater problem. Our lives are so busy we do not take the time to connect on a personal level. Or we connect through social media. A medium that does not need any personal contact or eye contact.

This is sad  in a world filled with people starved for recognition and warmth. A smile or a heartfelt greeting cost the giver nothing and the return is so great. Research tells us how that smiling reduces anxiety, boosts the immune system and makes a person appear more approachable and trustworthy. Plenty of very good reasons to share a smile with everyone we meet.

I found in my life that it doesn’t take any more effort to smile at people, say please and thank you and make eye contact. The return on my investment is a warm feeling of gratitude. Life just feels better when I approach it with an open heart for the people I share my path. What about you? Do you smile often and how does it feel?
