I retired nearly four months ago. During this time, I’ve moved to a new home and begun settling in. Finding new doctors, dentist, grocery stores all the essentials for living. Now I have the basics covered I reached out to several organizations to volunteer. Orientation for the Humane Society went well and today I worked my first shift. I opted to work with dogs and from 7:30-10 a.m. My job is cleaning kennels, changing bedding and filling water bowls.
I have always had dogs, and I grew up on a farm. This means I’m no stranger to the hard work involved with caring for animals. Animals hold a special place in my heart making me want to help. The Humane Society does an amazing job of caring for hundreds of animals. Their work is invaluable. The dogs in the shelter I worked have no homes and they need the volunteers to care for them. Most will fine good homes, but until then they need strangers to care for them.
This is a stressful time for the animals. They’re in a large kennel full of dogs of every shapes, ages and conditions. How can you help? Volunteer or if you can donate old towels or blankets, they are needed. Dog toys, water bowls, food dishes and dog food. Donations are always welcome. There are separate areas for cats, rabbits, birds and other small animals. So, if dogs aren’t for you can help a kitten, bunny or bird.
